Medicines and Therapy
The European Federation for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (EFCAM) estimates that over 100 million EU citizen currently use complementary and alternative medicine approaches in their ongoing health care provision.
EICCAM indicates that, based on surveys, 20% of EU citizens have a „clear preference for CAM healthcare, and another 20% are regular users of CAM“. The most commonly used CAM therapies in Europe are: homeopathy, phytotherapy (herbal medicine), anthroposophic medicine, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine (including acupuncture), osteopathy and chiropractic. Already in 2004 the World Health Organization estimated sales of herbal remedies in western europe alone to be over 5 billion USD.
Integrative medicines (homeopathy and anthroposophic medicines), excluding herbal remedies, represent a turnover of approximately 2 billion USD in Europe.
